Privacy policy

The short version. LoveRing uses opted-in, last-known locations to discover nearby people. Other users do not receive your exact coordinates. By default you use a random name and Critter avatar. With Pro, you can separately choose a displayed first name or photo and who may start a direct chat. Sharing your full private profile requires mutual agreement. You can turn visibility off or delete your account; existing Radar results may remain until refreshed or expired.

1. Who we are

LoveRing is operated by Cliyer LTD (“LoveRing”, “we”, “us”, “our”), the data controller for the personal information described in this policy, for the LoveRing mobile application on iOS and Android and the website at lovering.app (together, the “Service”). We process your data under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. You can reach us at any time at [email protected].

2. Information we collect

Information you give us

• Account data. We collect your declared date of birth to check that you are 18 or older and create an account identifier. If you choose to sync your account, we also process your email/password or Apple or Google sign-in information so you can return on another device.
• Profile data. Your generated name and avatar seed, first name, gender response (including “prefer not to say”), optional photo, and saved display and direct-chat preferences. Public display choices and mutual profile reveals are different ways of sharing, described in section 5. Choosing an alias and avatar does not mean we do not store your private profile.
• Content. Messages you send, games you play, scores, and reports or feedback you submit.
• Support data. Information you provide when you contact us for help.
• Purchase data. Product and transaction identifiers, purchase history, and subscription or entitlement status linked to your LoveRing account, to provide and restore paid access and handle purchase support. Store billing is handled by Apple or Google; we do not receive your full payment-card details.

Information collected automatically

• Geolocation data. Nearby discovery is the heart of LoveRing. If you grant location permission, we collect your device’s geolocation (latitude and longitude) so we can show you people whose last-known locations are nearby while you choose to be visible. Collection happens while the app is in use, and in the background only if you select background visibility and grant the required permission. Last-known locations can remain discoverable without further updates as explained below. If you decline, we do not collect your precise location and nearby discovery will not be available.
• Usage data. How you use the Service: when you log in, features you use, when you go visible or invisible, games played, invites sent, and interactions with other users.
• Technical data. Device and connection information such as IP address, device model and operating system, app version, crash logs, and identifiers associated with cookies or similar technologies (see our Cookie policy).

3. How your location is handled

• Other users only ever see an approximate distance, never your exact coordinates.
• Discovery is opt-in. In while-using mode, location updates pause when the app leaves the foreground, but your last-known location can remain discoverable for up to 1 hour after the last successful update.
• If you select background visibility and grant permission, updates can continue while the app is backgrounded or the phone is locked. Your last-known location can remain discoverable for up to 24 hours after the last successful update.
• These visibility periods run from the latest successful server update. They are not proof that someone is still physically at that location, and expiry from discovery does not itself delete every stored account record.
• Switching Visible nearby off stops further location publication and requests removal from new discovery searches. Removal takes effect after our server receives the request. If the request cannot reach the server, the last-known location can remain discoverable until its visibility period expires.
• Other people’s cached Radar results may remain until they refresh or expire. Cached results can remain for up to one hour without a refresh, bounded by the location’s visibility expiry. Going invisible does not end existing invitations, games, chats, or profile-sharing choices.
• Avatar positions on any radar or map-style illustration are decorative; they do not reveal your real-world position or direction.
• You can revoke location permission at any time in your device settings. This stops new location collection, but does not necessarily remove a location already published. Switch Visible nearby off to request removal; otherwise the visibility periods above apply. Existing chats and other non-location features remain usable.

4. How we use your information

• Provide the Service: create and maintain your account, show you discoverable nearby users, run games and chat, provide paid access, and manage your selected display, direct-chat permissions, and mutual reveals.
• Keep the community safe: enforce our Terms of service, detect fraud, spam, and abuse, review reports, and protect users.
• Improve the Service: understand how features are used, fix bugs, and develop new ones.
• Communicate with you: service messages (for example security alerts), and, where you have agreed, news and offers. You can opt out of marketing at any time.
• Meet legal obligations and establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.

5. Profile display, direct chats, and mutual reveals

Your displayed name and picture

The free defaults are a generated alias, a Critter avatar, and direct chats off. With active LoveRing Pro, you can choose your displayed name and picture separately: alias or first name, and avatar or saved photo. Your selected first name or photo can be shown to nearby users while you are visible, and to partners in delivered invitations, games, and chats, without a mutual profile reveal. Those users may still use an alias and avatar themselves. Public display does not show your gender, age, or exact date of birth. Hiding from Radar does not withdraw display choices in existing connections.

Who may start a chat

Direct chats are a separate choice from your displayed name and picture. With Pro, you can keep new direct chats off, allow anyone visible within 100 metres (including people using an alias and avatar), or allow only people with whom you have a current mutual profile reveal. Direct chats do not require game points, and can be allowed while you keep your alias and avatar. Without that permission, the game-first flow unlocks chat after both players reach 10 points. Changing direct-chat permissions affects new direct chats, not existing conversations.

Sharing your full private profile

In a game-first connection, sharing the reviewed private profile requires both people’s explicit agreement to their current details. This can share your first name, gender response, age, and optional photo, but not your exact date of birth. You can cancel a pending request or withdraw a mutual reveal; editing your details clears your previous agreement. Withdrawal ends mutual sharing, but does not turn off a separately selected public name or photo. Buying or restoring Pro does not change your display or direct-chat settings: you choose and save those separately. You can also end a connection or block someone. Previously viewed details, screenshots, and copies cannot be recalled.

6. Who we share your information with

• Other users. Your selected name and picture and approximate distance through nearby discovery; your selected display in invitations, games, and chats; messages and shared game content with the relevant partner; and the reviewed private profile after mutual agreement. Public display and direct-chat permissions work as described in section 5; another user’s permission to contact you does not require that they share their own real details.
• Service providers. Companies that process data on our behalf under contract, such as Google Firebase for accounts and backend data, RevenueCat for purchase and entitlement management, Expo for push notifications, and Resend for account emails. They may only use your data on our instructions.
• Legal and safety. Where required by law, to enforce our terms, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of our users or others, including disclosures to law enforcement where legally required.
• Business transfers. If LoveRing is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this policy.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with third parties for their own advertising purposes.

7. How long we keep your information

We keep your personal information only as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. When you delete your account, your profile and personal data are deleted or de-identified within 30 days, except where we must keep limited records for longer, for example to comply with the law, resolve disputes, enforce our agreements, or preserve safety records such as reports and blocks. Deleting the app without deleting your account does not delete your data.

8. Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

• access the personal information we hold about you and receive a copy;
• correct inaccurate or incomplete information;
• delete your account and personal information (also available in-app in Settings);
• object to or restrict certain processing, or request portability of your data;
• withdraw sharing choices by turning visibility off, changing your saved name/picture choices, disabling new direct chats, or withdrawing a mutual reveal, without affecting the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal. Device location permissions and existing results are explained in section 3; previously seen information cannot be recalled;
• lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk, or your local data protection authority.

To exercise any of these rights, use the controls in the app or email [email protected]. We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request. We do not discriminate against you for exercising your rights. These rights are guaranteed under the UK GDPR; if you are in the EEA, Switzerland, California, or another jurisdiction with privacy legislation, equivalent rights apply there, and you may also have the right to opt out of targeted advertising or data “sales”, as noted above, we do not sell your data or use it for targeted advertising.

9. Security

We use technical and organisational measures designed to protect your information, including encryption in transit, access controls, and approximate-only location sharing by design. No system is perfectly secure, so please keep your sign-in credentials private and tell us immediately at [email protected] if you suspect unauthorised access.

10. Children

LoveRing is strictly for adults aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If we learn that a user is underage, we will terminate the account and delete the associated data.

11. International transfers

Our service providers may process your information in countries other than your own, including the United States. Where we transfer personal data outside the UK, we rely on appropriate safeguards as required by the UK GDPR, such as the International Data Transfer Agreement or the UK addendum to EU standard contractual clauses.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you in the app or by email before they take effect. The “Last updated” date above always shows the current version.
